California city to be covered by Wi-Fi system
12/12/2003 - 1:36:02 pm
Aiirnet Wireless will install a citywide Wi-Fi wireless Internet access system in the city of Cerritos, CA, the company announced recently.
The system will cover the entire 8.6 square miles of the city in what Woodland Hills, CA-based Aiirnet describes as the largest Wi-Fi service deployment in the United States. The transmitters that will connect individual computers to the wireless network are being placed atop public buildings, traffic lights and other structures in the city, The Associated Press reported.
Cerritos, a Southern California suburb with 50,000 residents, does not have citywide DSL or cable modem broadband Internet access.
Wi-Fi, a system that offers high-speed, wireless Internet access, has become popular at some truck stops, including Flying J locations.
In addition, Pilot Travel Centers recently announced that its locations would offer Wi-Fi services through Truckstop.net, which itself recently said it would offer the service through as many as 3,000 truck stops nationwide through a deal with Overland Park, KS-based telecom company Sprint.
Aiirnet will offer its broadband Internet service to residents and businesses in Cerritos, a suburb in the southern part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The town is near Interstates 5, 105 and 605, as well as state Highway 91.
